Situated at an altitude of 450 metres above sea level, The Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Altaserra is an ancient parish in the Diocese of Arezzo, with certainty is an early Christian Church, perhaps one of the first, if not the first in Valdarno that still exist. It is documented since the 8th century, but there is evidence of its existence since the 5th–6th century, while it was at the center of disputes among bishops of Siena and Arezzo, in a border area that inevitably generates conflicts between religious dependence from Arezzo and administration of the territory of Siena. The present Church, 15 meters long and 8 wide was rebuilt in the 12th century.
